“First of all, we have to give SCWWTS some Kyra accessories for this AMAZING crocheted SP bag! Like what Kyra!! I’m so impressed,” enthused Lorde recently during an email newsletter to fans.

The rented bag:

And now you can create your own if you want! Read more instructions from SCWWTS Kyra se:

Solar Power Crochet Tote Bag – as approved by the Lorde herself!

You will need:
– White, orange and brown yarn (I used I Love This Cotton, but any 4 weight cotton yarn will do! Keep in mind you will need lots of white – I have probably used about 900 yards/825 meters, or about 5 skeins of my particular brand. One skein of each orange and brown was enough for me!).
– 3.5mm hook.
– Sewing needle.
– Patience and determination

*The pattern is written in American crochet terms.

Step 1: Chain 76. Crochet a single crochet in the second stitch from the hook and continue with single crochets in each stitch until the end of the row. [Chain 1, turn, and single crochet across.] Repeat the instructions in parentheses until you have 75 rows in total. This will create the back of your bag.

2nd step: Chain 76. Then, using single crochets as before, crochet the front of the bag using this diagram. Always remember to chain 1 and turn at the end of each row, as you did for the back of the bag.

(If you are relatively new to crochet, I recommend doing some research before starting this part – I had never done anything like this before when I started! I found this article from Jo to the Really helpful for learning how to make color changes, and this Crochet Spot article is good for understanding how to read color charts.)

Step 3: Chain 9. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Continue to crochet a single crochet in each stitch until the end of the row. [Chain 1, turn, and single crochet across.] Repeat instructions in parentheses until desired strap length is achieved. Mine are about 28 inches (71cm), but you can make them longer or shorter depending on your preference. Repeat to create your second strap.

You can stop here and skip to step 6, but if you want to add depth to your bag with side and/or bottom panels, keep reading!

Step 4: Chain 13. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Continue to crochet a single crochet in each stitch until the end of the row. [Chain 1, turn, and single crochet across.] Repeat the instructions in parentheses until you have 75 rows in total. You now have a side panel. Repeat to create a panel for the other side.

Step 5: Chain 76. Single crochet in the second chain from the hook. Continue to crochet a single crochet in each stitch until the end of the row. [Chain 1, turn, and single crochet across.] Repeat the instructions in parentheses until you have 12 rows in total. This will be your bottom panel.

Step 6: Sew all the pieces together, using pins or stitch markers to hold the pieces in place as you go.

You now have a completed solar powered tote bag!
